Hossa Hurt

Practice Update: Apparently Nick Boynton and Marian Hossa collided at practice. Boynton is okay (God rot his soul), but Hossa had to be helped off the ice and then limped to the locker room. Not good. Will update later as more details trickle in. Please be okay Boss Hoss.

Update (6:37pm): There is now footage on CSN of Hossa being helped off the ice. Apparently he couldn't put any weight on one of his legs. Not optimistic news...

How you know I'm not a puck bunny

I blame Hannah. She brought this upon my conscious with all our talk of me marrying Jack Skille, and now I feel the need to explain myself. First off, for those of you who don't know what a puck bunny is, please click.

Why I'm not a puck bunny:
  1. I know how to talk about hockey
  2. I know how to spell "Hjalmarsson" without Googling him
  3. I've been a fan since I was nine-years-old
  4. I love the game of hockey, not just its players
  5. I know my players have flaws
  6. Never have I, nor will I ever, bring a sign to a game/practice proclaiming my love for a player
  7. If I met a player, I would not scream like a hormone driven banshee
  8. If I met Jack Skille, I still wouldn't scream like aforementioned banshee
  9. I'm realistic in the fact that I will probably never, ever date/sleep with a player
  10. I will admit that I have serious fangirl moments. WE ALL DO!

Okay I'm done now. Oh my gosh this. This is how I ignore homework. Gosh.

Ask and I shall deliver. Finally a good Seabrook shirt that I know Ms. Blackhawks will approve of. I was so close to putting "Seabrook" instead of "Seabs" and using the double O's to my advantage, but didn't want to make this shirt more vulgar than need be. Enjoy!

Bad night to be a king...

The Blackhawks beat the L.A. Kings 2-1 in an exciting, energy-filled game where Corey Crawford was a stud in net with 21 saves. Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane tallied the goals for Chicago, while John Scott attempted to kill a man.

The Bulls won their royal showdown, defeating the Sacramento Kings 96-85. This is the first time since the Jordan era that the Bulls have had a winning Circus Trip.

LeBron James (or King James as that dipshit likes to go by) lost. Enough said.

Oh and I got put in Twitter jail for an hour for going over my tweet limit apparently. My last name is German for "royal leader." Yes, it is truly a terrible night to be a king.

How I relate hockey to hunting

Him: "I shot a deer today. Don't think there's any deer-related hockey teams though."
Me: "Was it a buck?"
Him: "Yes. Why?"
Me: "Aren't they called the king of the forest because of their crown of horns?"
Him: "Sometimes, yes."
Me: "Then we're good to go."

Yes, I did manage to make that conversation into an omen foretelling a Chicago win tonight. Go Blackhawks!

Future life with Hannah

Or as most of you guys and gals know her, @palindrome713. I have never met her personally, but she's easily one of my favorite people on Twitter, and after we've both graduated from college (we're both sophomores currently) we're determined to live together in the great city of Chicago. Sound like the weirdest plan ever? Oh believe me, it gets better.

Hannah & Alex's ideal life situation:
  1. Matching dogs that look like this. They'll be named Duncs & Seabs.
  2. Cream cheese frosting whenever the Blackhawks lose.
  3. Cream cheese frosting whenever the hell we feel like it.
  4. Molly's cupcakes at every Blackhawks game.
  5. Working for the Blackhawks; Hannah in PR, Alex in advertising.
  6. Not letting each other marry ugly men.
  7. Season ticket holders for the Blackhawks.
  8. Will own reindeer named Stosh and Jet.
  9. Start our own t-shirt design company.

I'm sure I'm missing a few things. Of course this list is destined to get longer. And yes, we're well aware how far-fetched some of our plans are...like being able to afford season tickets in the near future. But hey, we can dream!

Shit

Of course any sports reporter on Twitter would give us the good news before the bad.

The Good: Corey Crawford, who recorded 26 saves last night in the Blackhawks' 4-1 win over the Ducks, will start again tonight in L.A. This is well deserved after his solid play last night. Now don't take this praise as me jumping ship on Turco. I think that they're both great goalies, and the Blackhawks are lucky to play with either of them on any given night.

The Bad: Fernando Pisani will not be playing tonight. He's out with an upper body injury. And who will play in his stead? None other than the giant teddy bear himself, John Scott. Let's hope he actually does something of note this game.

*how I feel about the entire Scott situation*

Today's to-do list

  2. Work on talking points for Anthropology of Communication presentation
  3. Write paper one for Anthro.
  4. Write paper two for Anthro.
  5. Finish typographer poster for Typography
  6. Write paper for Art History
  7. Complete food table for Nutrition
  8. Come up with idea for Nutrition final project
  9. Scan in at least 100 different fonts for Typography
  10. Begin putting together children's book for Design Lab
Yeah. That looks doable.

Blackhawks Bipolar Disorder

They're up, they're down, they're good, they're bad, they're all over the place. To put it simply, the Blackhawks are quite the circus act right now. Keeping with their bipolar trend, the boys won tonight with a 4-1 win over the not so mighty Ducks of Anaheim after their Wednesday loss to the San Jose Sharks.

Coach Q saw fit to give us all a Black(Hawks) Friday special and put the bromances back together. Duncan Keith was reunited with Brent Seabrook and Brian Campbell was partnered with Niklas Hjalmarsson once again! The Ducks drew first blood in period one when Dan Sexton managed to sneak one past Corey Crawford on the power play after Fernando Pisani was called for tripping. Three minutes later the horn sounded with the Blackhawks down by one, but leading the shots-on-goal 13-6. Despite the deficit, the Hawks played an energized first period with plenty of opportunities and plenty of great saves from Crawford, who is quickly proving himself to be a highly talented and hard working goalie.

Second period showed the same intensity as period one, with the Hawks just itching for that first goal. Seven minutes into the period, Marian Hossa was called for another tripping penalty. With God in the sin bin, you could feel Hawks fan everywhere sigh. We're we going to see another goal? Well, as it turns out, we did in fact see another goal, just not the one everyone expected. Patrick Sharp raced up ice with the puck, made a beautiful pass to Keith who shot and SCORED! Shorty goal for Duncs! Hawks tie it up and never look back. They managed to survive three more Ducks second period power plays (Jack Skille; 2 minutes for tripping, Nick Boynton; 2 minutes for roughing, Boynton-served by Patrick Kane-2 minutes for roughing) and entered the second intermission tied one a piece and leading SOG's 23-15. Unfortunately, the boys would also start period three on the penalty kill.

Power play, schmower schmay. Hawks survived yet another Ducks power play (thankfully). Poor Seabs probably made the shot block of the game when the puck ricocheted off of his stick into his...err little Seabrooks. That's two games in a row now where the hockey deities have shown that they're not in favor of little Seabrooks skating around. Fortunately, the big guy came back to the ice shortly after. Sharp put Chicago ahead after Andy Sutton committed a Boynton-esque giveaway. Karma's a bitch Sutton. That's what you get for attempting to decapitate Jassen Cullimore in the second period with your elbow. Anyway, three minutes after handsome Sharp's equally handsome goal, Hjalmarsson put the Blackhawks up 3-1 with his first goal of the season! FREE MEATBALLS FOR EVERYONE! Troy Brouwer capped off the scoring with his third goal of the circus trip, making it 4-1 good guys. The rest of the period passed in a blur of lightning fast Crawford stops, who ended the night with 26 saves.

Blackhawks win 4-1 and are now 12-11-2.
Three stars: Patrick Sharp, Dan Sexton and Duncan Keith.

Apparently I'm supposed to marry you because you're
1) a very talented hockey player
2) going to be even better in the future
3) attractive
4) always smiling
5) making enough money so that I'll never have to work.

This is all the vodka-fueled logic of my father. He likes you a lot Crash. Or the vodka likes you a lot. I'm not sure which was speaking at the time. I'm going to take that as a good sign, since none of my previous boyfriends have really impressed him at all. Unfortunately, I'm realistic and my da is not. Sigh. Oh well.

Hey Hubby.
My da would love that. Fat chance.

What is the meaning of Thanksgiving?

Is it the football match,
with the pigskin ball
and men in tight pants?

Is it the games we play,
surrounded by cousins,
uncles and aunts?

Is it the decorations,
all in shades of orange,
yellow and red?

Or maybe it's the turkey,
stuffed with tryptophan
that puts us to bed.

No, the meaning of Thanksgiving
is simple and clear.
The meaning of Thanksgiving
is being with those we hold dear.

Cheesy Mushroom Lasagna

I once made this dish and ate the entire thing by myself in one day. It was my lunch and dinner! True story. When my mom makes it, she puts shredded chicken in it as well.
Serves four-five.

Ingredients:
8 lasagna noodles
(1) 10¾ oz. can condensed cream of chicken and mushroom soup
(1) 4 oz. can sliced mushrooms, drained
1/3 cup skim milk
½ teaspoon dried basil, crushed
1½ cups cream-style cottage cheese (12 oz.)
1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (6 oz.)
Grated Parmesan cheese (as much needed)

Directions:
1. Cook lasagna noodles in boiling, salted water according to package directions.
2. Stir together condensed soup, mushrooms, skim milk and basil.
3. Lay half the noodles in a baking dish.
4. Top with half of the soup mixture, cottage cheese, cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese.
5. Repeat layers of noodles, sauce, cottage cheese, cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese.
6. Bake in 350 degrees oven for 45 minutes, covered in foil.
7. Uncover for final five minutes.

BBQ Pork Ribs

I personally am not a pork person. Nor do I like the taste of barbecue sauce, but when my mother makes these pork ribs, there is absolute silence at the table as my father, brother and sister devour them. The only noise that can be heard besides barbaric chewing is the satisfied moans of my family as they practically inhale the ribs. Like the Dijon pork chops, this recipe needs a slow cooker. Sorry college kids!
Serves four-five.

Ingredients:
3 to 3 1/2 1bs. pork country-style ribs
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon bottled hot pepper sauce

Directions
1. Place ribs in a 3 1/2 to 4 quart slow cooker.
2. In a small bowl combine the remaining ingredients.
3. Pour sauce over ribs, turning to coat.
4. Cover and cook on low-heat setting for six hours.
5. Transfer ribs to a serving platter and cover to keep warm.
6. Skim fat from surface of sauce; pour sauce into a medium saucepan.
7. Bring sauce to boiling; reduce heat slightly.
8. Boil gently, uncovered, until thickened to desired consistency, five to seven minutes (should make about one cup).

Baked Ziti with Meatballs

When I was a high school soccer player, my mother would make this for pasta parties. It was always a hit, probably because it's a lot like mostaccioli with an interesting twist. For the spaghetti sauce I usually like to use vodka sauce.
Serves four-five.

Ingredients:
1 lb. ziti
40 oz. jar of spaghetti sauce (sorry, but I don't make my own sauce)
24 oz. whole milk ricotta
2 cups shredded mozzarella
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
1/4 cup Romano
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 1/4-inch pieces
1 bag frozen meatballs (I also don't make my own meatballs)

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Cook ziti until desired doneness.
3. Heat frozen meatballs in microwave for three minutes or until heated through.
4. In a large bowl, combine the spaghetti sauce and ricotta; mix well.
5. Add the cooked ziti and meatballs; toss gently.
6. In a large greased baking dish, pour in pasta mixture; sprinkle with mozzarella, Parmesan and remaining Romano.
7. Dot with the butter.
8. Cover baking dish with aluminum foil.
9. Bake until top is golden brown and bubbly, about 30-40 minutes.

Baked Noodle Pie

This is another dish that I could eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It's that versatile. It is also a recipe that kills me to make because it smells insanely good while it's being prepared.
Serves three-four.

Ingredients:
8 oz. bulk pork sausage
1 medium Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and chopped
5 oz. Fettucine
2 eggs
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (2 oz.)
1/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs
1 beaten egg
1/2 cup cream-style cottage cheese, drained
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (2 oz.)

Directions:
1. In a skillet cook the bulk pork sausage and chopped apple until the sausage is brown; drain off the fat and set aside.
2. Cook noodles until desired doneness.
3. Combine the the two eggs, 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese and fine dry bread crumbs.
4. Pour the egg mixture over the noodles; toss to coat.
5. Turn mixture into a greased nine-inch quiche dish or pie plate.
6. Combine the one beaten egg, cottage cheese, and 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese; stir in the sausage and apple mixture.
7. Spoon mixture over the noodles.
8. Bake in a 350 degrees oven for 20-25 minutes or until heated through.

*I usually cook the noodles until they're just al dente. They'll continue to cook in the oven.*

Dijon Pork Chops

This recipe isn't exactly what I call college-student-friendly since it calls for the use of a slow-cooker, which is usually not found in the average college kid kitchen. For those of you who do have a slow-cooker, these chops are delicious and this is coming from someone who doesn't like pork. The meat will literally fall off the bone when cooked correctly.
Serves four.

Ingredients:
1 (10 1/4 oz.) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/4 cup dry white wine or chicken broth
1/4 cup Dijon-style mustard
1 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon pepper
5 medium potatoes, cut into 1/4 inch slices (12/3 lbs.)
1 medium onion, sliced
4 pork loin chops, cut 3/4 inch thick

Directions:
1. In a large bowl combine soup, wine or chicken broth, mustard, thyme, garlic, and pepper.
2. Add potatoes and onion, stirring to coat.
3. Transfer to a 4 to 5 quart slow cooker. Place chops on potatoes.
4. Cover and cook on low-heat setting for seven to eight hours or on high-heat setting for 3 1/2 hours.

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
12 oz. thin spaghetti

Directions:
1. Cook pasta until desired doneness.
2. In small saucepan or skillet cook garlic in olive oil until golden brown.
3. Stir in parsley, salt, and red pepper.
4. Heat and stir for 3 minutes.
5. Toss garlic mixture with cooked spaghetti until coated.

Prosciutto Stuffed Ravioli

Okay more accurately this recipe should be prosciutto stuffed wontons, but who cares. Either way, these little guys are delicious.
Serves three-four.

Ingredients:
1 (15 oz) container whole milk ricotta cheese
1 (10 oz) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed, squeezed dry
1/4 pound thinly sliced prosciutto, chopped
2 large egg yolks
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
48 wonton wrappers
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
11/2 teaspoons dried oregano
freshly grated Romano

Directions:
1. Whisk the ricotta, spinach, prosciutto, egg yolks, salt and pepper in a medium bowl to blend.
2. Place 1 tablespoon of the ricotta filling in the center of a wonton wrapper. Brush the edge of the wrapper lightly with water.
3. Fold the wrapper in half, enclosing the filling completely and forming a triangle. Pinch the edges to seal. Transfer the ravioli to baking sheets. Repeat with the remaining filling and wrappers.
4. Melt the butter in a small heavy skillet over medium heat. Add the oregano and stir for 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove from the heat.
5. Working in batches, cook the ravioli in a large pot of boiling salted water until just tender, stirring occasionally, about 4 minutes per batch. Transfer the ravioli to a large shallow bowl.
6. Pour the oregano butter over the ravioli and toss gently to coat. Sprinkle the Romano over the ravioli and serve.

Beer Cheese Linguine

If I could eat this meal every day, I would. Unfortunately, I would be extremely obese if I did. If you have a man in your life or are a female who loves beer like myself, make this dish and never search for another beer sauce recipe again. Hands-down, this is the best thing my mother ever made for me. For vegetarian, simply exclude the bacon.
Serves four.

Ingredients:
12 oz. linguine
5-10 strips of bacon, cooked and crumbled
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon instant beef bouillon granules
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (8 oz.)
1/3 cup beer

Directions:
1. Cook linguine until desired doneness.
2. In a medium saucepan, cook flour, beef bouillon granules, & pepper in melted butter or margarine.
3. Add milk all at once.
4. Cook and stir until mixture is thickened and bubbly.
5. Cook for one minute more.
6. Stir in American cheese, cheddar cheese, bacon & beer, stirring until the cheese has melted.
7. Pour over linguine.

*It is best to use a whisk when making this sauce.*

Artichoke Pesto Chicken Pasta

I know artichokes aren't high on everyone's favorite foods list, but in this dish they are scrumptious, especially with the pesto. Like all of the recipes I have posted on here so far, this is another easy-to-make recipe great for college students. Again, I usually go vegetarian with this dish, which means leaving out the chicken. It's great either way!
Serves four.

Ingredients:
10 oz. (2 cups) medium shell pasta
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into 1-inch pieces
1 (14 oz.) can artichoke hearts, drained, quartered
1/2 cup pesto
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:
1. Cook pasta until desired doneness.
2. Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat until hot.
3. Add chicken to skillet; cook and stir 4 to 5 minutes or until browned and no longer pink.
4. Stir in artichoke hearts, pesto and pasta.
5. Cook an additional 1 to 2 minutes or until thoroughly heated, stirring constantly.
6. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Snickerdoodles

As an admitted chocoholic, I'm personally for any cookie that has chocolate in it, but these cookies are incredibly good. The recipe is another one that I picked up from my semester in foods and nutrition class.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or almond extract)
11/3 cups and 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons white sugar
3 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Directions:
1. Cream together with hand mixer butter, shortening, 3/4 cup sugar, egg & vanilla.
2. In another bowl, mix flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, & salt.
3. Blend, using a spoon, flour, cream of tartar, soda & salt mix.
4. Transfer to smaller bowl.
5. Cover with tin foil & chill in fridge for 20 minutes.
6. Place 3 tablespoons sugar & 3 teaspoons cinnamon in baggy.
7. Shape dough into small, ping-pong sized balls (after chilling).
8. Drop into baggy with sugar/cinnamon mixture & shake.
9. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
10. Bake 8-10 minutes in 400 degrees oven or until set.
11. Remove immediately from baking sheets & place on cooling racks.

Breakfast Pizza

I learned this one when I took foods and nutrition class my senior year of high school. It was easily my favorite recipe that we prepared that semester. All of my favorite breakfast foods are rolled into one convenient little pizza.
Serves four-five.

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups of hash brown potatoes (thawed)
6 eggs
3 tablespoons milk
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
salt & pepper to taste
1/4 cup onion chopped
1/2 cup tomato chopped
5-6 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled

Directions:
1. Put oil in a large (12 inch) skillet. Heat over medium heat.
2. When hot, add onions and saute for 3 minutes.
3. Add potatoes & cook for 5 minutes until brown. Stir occasionally to ensure even browning.
4. Add bacon.
5. Meanwhile, whisk eggs and milk in small bowl.
6. Pour egg and milk mixture over veggies and meat. Reduce heat to low.
7. Cover skillet. After 8 minutes, add tomatoes. Cook 8-10 minutes until eggs are set.
8. Sprinkle with cheese. Cover. Cook until cheese is melted.
9. Cut into wedges and serve. Salt and pepper to taste.

4. Pour into pie shell.
5. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until center is set.

Rotini with Spinach Sauce

This was the very first recipe I learned how to prepare. It's delicious and a great way to get young children to eat spinach. My mother can attest to that.
Serves four.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup margarine
1 (10 oz.) package chopped spinach (thawed in the microwave)
10 oz. rotini
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup ricotta cheese
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup milk
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

Directions:
1. Cook rotini until desired doneness.
2. Melt butter in 2 quart saucepan.
3. Cook spinach and salt for 10 minutes.
4. Reduce heat to low and add remaining ingredients.
5. Mix sauce well and cook until thoroughly heated.
6. Pour over cooked rotini.

Dijon Chicken Pasta

I'm not really sure why, but I have yet to post any of the recipes that not only keep me well-fed, but are also easy to prepare. I'm a sophomore college student with a mediocre kitchen and beginner cooking utensils. I need my recipes to be simple. Thankfully, my mother is a fantastic cook who learned from her mother, another master in the kitchen, so of course she passed her wisdom, and recipes, on to me when I got my first place with a kitchen. Expect the next few posts to be recipe posts.

This first recipe is Dijon chicken pasta. When my mother makes it, it's the only dish on the table. It's such a fulfilling entrée that nothing else needs to be served with it. However, if you do desire a side dish, I recommend garlic bread. When I make this dish, I usually go vegetarian (cheaper this way) which means I don't need the chicken breast, flour or cracked pepper.
Serves four.

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon cracked pepper
1 lb. skinned and boned chicken breast, cut into 1-inch pieces
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 clove garlic, minced
1-1/4 cups whipping cream
1/3 cup country Dijon mustard
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
12 oz. spaghetti

Directions:
1. Cook spaghetti until desired doneness.
2. In a plastic bag, combine flour, chicken and pepper; shake to coat.
3. In large skillet, brown chicken in 2 tablespoons of butter.
4. Remove chicken to heated platter; keep warm.
5. Add remaining tablespoon of butter to skillet.
6. Saute garlic until soft.
7. Stir in cream, mustard and cheese.
8. Add chicken; keep warm.
9. Toss in hot pasta and serve.

Sweet Potato Casserole

Due to popular demand (actually just Corie's request and my friends' satisfaction) I am posting the recipe for my grandmother's sweet potato casserole. My mother makes this dish yearly for Thanksgiving. Personally, I find this to be the best way to enjoy sweet potatoes/yams. The dish can be eaten with the main course or as a dessert. I guarantee your tummy's satisfaction! Enjoy!
